Places to Visit near the Honey Valley
Šilinė Saloon

Built in the mid 18th century, it is one of Lithuania’s many folk monuments. Currently, the Panemune park directors are established in the saloon. They’ve put up an exhibition inside to familiarize the tourists with the subtleties of fishing in the Nemunas, and the nature surrounding it. The exhibition is based on the statement once made by the elders of this region – Nemunas feeds, provides warmth, and clothes. It “feeds” because people have been fishing there since the oldest of days, and also, as Nemunas recedes in the spring, the nutrient rich sediments float up from the bottom to settle on the fields around its banks - fertilizing the soil from which many plentiful harvests have been brought up. It “provides warmth” because of the firewood that it brings with when the floods recede. Villagers used to set out with their rowboats and load them up with plenty of it to dry and then burn as firewood throughout the year. Nemunas “clothes” because it is a habitat for many rodents (beavers for instance), whose pelts were traded in (or made into) clothing. Also, located right next to the Siline saloon, there is a beautiful oak grove, known to the locals as azuolyne.

Panemunė Castle

Built on the right side peninsula peak of Nemunas, near the Kaunas – Jurbarkas road. The name of this castle was changed on several occasions due to the influences of its different owners. It started out as the Panemune castle, then it became the Gelgaudas castle due to the rule of the Gelgaudas. After the revolt of 1831, it became the Zamkus castle and in the beginning of the 20th century, it was named as Vytenai by the monks who had established themselves around there. However, recently its name has been switched back to the Panemune castle.
